Study in Australia: Changes in Visa Policies Effective from 1 July as per Federal Budget

The application fees for Australian visas are set to rise as per the Australian Migration. Student Visa holders can work over 40 hours/ week.

Australia’s Migration system is ready to change visa policies. There will be a hike in some of the visa application costs. The procedure will be effective from 1 July. International students can now work for over 40 hours per week. Temporary Graduate Visa holders will be can stay in Australia for a longer period. 

The current workforce shortages will also improve. International students will be capped at 48 hours per fortnight. The policy changes will also be implemented during stay periods for international students.

Changes for Visa Holders

Different visas such as visitor, working holiday, work and holiday, temporary activity and temporary work short stay specialists will also see a hike in prices from 1 July. The application fee for visitor Subclass 600 visa and student Subclass 500 visa will increase. The changes in visa fees will affect international students and working holiday visa holders.

The Permanent Migration Program 2023- 2024 will offer 190,000 places for skilled migrants. Also, the authorities will divide the visas between skilled and family visas in a ratio of 70:30. The minimum salary an applicant will receive sponsorship from an employer will also increase. 

Around 38,000 tourists travelled to Australia from India in March 2023 as per Tourism Australia’s website. Whereas, numbers for January 2023 were 31,000 and in February 2023 were 19,000.  

Migration expert, Neha Singh said that the changes will bring more scrutiny to international students visas. The pathways will become ‘easier’ for the students. 

New Zealanders living in Australia for 4 years or more will be eligible for Australian Citizenship. There will be no need for the New Zealanders to apply for permanent visas.
