Originally, National Doctor’s Day in India came into effect in memory of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, to honour the contributions he made in the field of medicine. It was in 1991 when the Indian government officially declared this decision. Dr Roy was born on July 1 and also died on the same day. Therefore, the day, of utmost significance of his being, is regarded as the day to celebrate National Doctor’s Day. 

Taking inspiration from his life and work, more and more advancement in the field along with the importance of doctors is esteemed significant for the celebration of this day. Who Was Dr B.C Roy?

Let’s learn a bit more about Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy or  Dr B.C. Roy, after whom National Doctor’s Day is celebrated in India. His birthday was on July 1, 1882, and his birthplace was in Patna, Bihar. After studying medicine at Calcutta, he furthered his studies in London, where he received his MRCP and FRCS degrees. Did you know that apart from being a well-known physician, he was also a freedom fighter? He received the Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961. Moreover, he also served as the Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 to 1962. His work in medicine is so noteworthy that  B.C. Roy National Award was also established to honour outstanding individuals in the field of medicine, science, etc.  

Did You Know:  Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy was the personal physician of Mahatma Gandhi.
