What is Sick Leave Application?

An application for sick leave is written by students and working professionals to the principals and their managers respectively. It is written in a formal style to the concerned authorities informing them about the poor health condition. The sick leave application contains information like the name of the person, details of the concerned authorities, current health status, details about the illness, duration, and date of the leave. If a person is quite unwell and is planning to take a long duration of leave then they must provide a sick leave application with a medical certificate.

Focus Areas while Writing a Sick Leave Application

While writing a sick leave application make sure you split it into three paragraphs as the proper spacing and formatting are quite important when it comes to writing an application.

First or Introductory paragraph – The first paragraph is all about you telling personal details about yourself which includes your name, in case of school and college – your class and course name respectively, and case of office your job designation. Make sure that while writing this you maintain a formal, professional, and respectful tone as an application like this should never be written informally.

The second paragraph or the body -This part of the application is going to be about the no. of days you are going to take leave, the date of the leave, and details about your illness. It is easy to forget that you don’t have to write any unnecessary information here. Always stick to the specificness of the details and avoid any irrelevant information.

Concluding paragraph – In the concluding paragraph you need to formally ask the concerned authorities to permit you to take the leave. Make sure that here also you maintain a respectful and formal tone to avoid any miscommunication.

Contact details about the recipient – After the date, you need to mention the details about the recipient like the address and name of the company or school.

Subject – After the contact details of the recipient you need to write the subject of the application, which should not be more than 5-6 words.

Salutation – The next thing is to greet the concerned person. If you are a working professional make sure you follow the current trend where a person is greeted by their first name.

Personal details – After the salutation, you need to write about some of your personal details in the introductory paragraph which includes your name and job designation.
