ADW Scholarship: Overview

Being one of the most literate states in India, Tamil Nadu has many educational opportunities for its students. It has the highest reservation percentage in India i.e. 69% for the socially backward classes. Provided by the Department of Backward Classes Welfare, the ADW Scholarship allows students from socially and economically backward tribal communities access to quality education without worrying about the financial burden. Eligibility Criteria

The students must fulfil the following eligibility criteria to avail of the schemes under the ADW Scholarship in 2024:

  1. The applicant must be a permanent resident of Tamil Nadu for more than 5 years.
  2. The applicant must belong to the SC/ST/Minority Muslims/Converted Christians categories.
  3. The applicant must be pursuing their primary/secondary/higher studies in a recognised institute/university in India.
  4. The applicant’s family income should be less than INR 2 lakh per annum.
  5. Candidates applying to ADW hostels should have a distance of more than 5 km between their institute and residence (not applicable to girl candidates).
  6. The applicant must be enrolled in Adi Dravidar Welfare, GTR, Government or Government-aided schools.
  7. Students who want to pursue Class 11 and 12 through the ADW scholarship should have a family income of less than INR 1 lakh per annum.

Rewards and Benefits

The ADW Scholarship offers a variety of benefits to students of all educational levels. This includes academic expenses and maintenance allowances for the duration of their education. Let’s look at the rewards and benefits for students at different phases of education:

For Primary School Students

  1. Female students in school receive the following incentives through this scholarship:
  • SC/ST girls studying in Class 3-5 – INR 500 per annum
  • SC/ST girls studying in Class 6 – INR 1,000 per annum
  • SC/ST girls studying in Class 7-8 – INR 1,500 per annum
  1. Children having parents engaged in unclean occupations studying in class 10 receive INR 1,850.
  2. Academic expenses like special fees, application fees, registration, and examination fees are covered by the government.
  3. 1000 boys and 1000 girls who have scored top ranks in Class 12 Boards receive INR 3,000 per annum for 5 years
  4. Day scholars of Class 9-10 receive INR 2,250 per annum to cover their academic expenses, while hostellers receive INR 4,500 per annum.

For Higher Secondary Level Students

  1. From each district, the government selects 10 deserving students with top ranks in Class 10 and allows them to pursue their studies in the most distinguished private schools for Class 11 & 12.
  2. The ADW scholarship provides free textbooks to students in Class 1-12 in schools built by Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare schools and Government schools.
  3. Class 10 and 12 students receive free guides and question banks for preparation for their Board exams.
  4. Students studying/living in ADW schools/hostels receive 4 sets of uniforms for free.
  5. Class 10 and 12 students get access to special classes to help them prepare for Board examinations.
  6. Boys and girls of Class 11-12 who have converted to Christianity get free bicycles.

For College Students

  1. For students wanting to pursue higher education, here’s the amount offered by ADW scholarship:
  • For students pursuing UG/Polytechnic courses – INR 7,500
  • For PG/Professional courses – INR 8,000
  • For law graduates wishing to start their own practice – INR 50,000

  1. School or college headmasters/principals are responsible for completing and submitting student applications online. 
  2. Following online application submission, the institution head should compile hard copies of student applications and supporting documents and send them via postal mail to the respective district’s Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare office. 
  3. ADW officials will review the applications and forward them to the Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Department Directorate. 
  4. The welfare department will directly deposit the ADW scholarship amount into the beneficiary’s account through the ECS (Electronic Clearing Service) system.

ADW Scholarship Renewal

To make sure that their ADW scholarship gets renewed for the next academic year, students need to take the following steps:

  1. Maintain the minimum academic performance required to continue receiving the scholarship.
  2. Submit an annual renewal application form to continue receiving the scholarship, including details like academic performance, financial situation, and any extracurricular activities or community service commitments.
  3. Attach supporting documents to their renewal application form.
  4. Submit their renewal application form before the specified deadline. Late applications may not be considered.
  5. Once the renewal application is submitted, await approval from the ADW Scholarship Committee.

  7. If the renewal application is approved, the scholarship amount will be disbursed directly to the student’s account through the ECS (Electronic Clearing Service) system.
