MGU CAT Overview

The MG University CAT is conducted annually to intake students in the Postgraduate courses, Master of Technology (M.Tech) and Master of Business Administration courses (MBA). The MGU CAT is an offline exam conducted in various test centres in Kerala including Thiruvananthapuram, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Kannur. 

The MGU CAT is an umbrella examination for students seeking admission in MSc, M.A., LLM, MBA etc. The examination is conducted within the duration of two days where a different set of courses are allotted time spans between 09:00 AM-11:00 AM, 11.30 AM-01.30 PM, and 02.30 PM-04.30 PM on the 06th and 07th of May 2023.

The officials of Mahatma Gandhi University have recently extended the application date for the MGU CAT 2023. The MGU Common Admission Test 2023 application window is now open till 2nd May 2023. In the Notification released by the university, the MGU Common Admission Test 2023 was scheduled for the 6th and 7th of May 2023. In the latest notification released by Mahatma Gandhi University, it was stated that the NEET 2023 Medical Examination is also scheduled for the same day. That is why the MGU Common Admission Test 2023 exam was postponed.

Marking Scheme

The MGU Common Admission Test pattern and marking scheme are specific to the courses opted for by the candidate during the application process. The candidate is evaluated without any negative marking in the written examination with 01 mark for each correct answer. 

The marks are allotted on the basis of one or all of the following: Marks obtained in the objective examination, Descriptive examination, Bonus marks, Interviews, Group Discussion, Marks obtained under the sports category, and Marks for Cultural Activities. MGU CAT Syllabus

The Syllabus for the MGU Common Admission Test will be divided into two categories, The Objective Common Admission Test and the Written descriptive test. Syllabus for Major Topics

The courses syllabus for each major topic is as follows: 

MSc in Microbiology or Biophysics or Biotechnology or Biochemistry

Graduate Level knowledge of Microbiology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, or Biotechnology as per the course of preference. 

MSc in Chemistry 

BSc. level Chemistry syllabus should be well prepared by the candidates. 

MSc in Computer Science

The candidate should have knowledge of the graduation syllabus of Computer Science along with aptitude in Logical Reasoning and Numerical Ability.

MSc in Physics

The examinee should gain graduation-level knowledge of Physics along with supplementary knowledge of Mathematics

MSc in Psychology 

The candidate should practice the English language, key concepts of mathematics, and graduation-level knowledge of Psychology

MSc in Environmental Science and Management/Disaster Management

The candidate should learn Environmental Science, and Bioscience and have Rudimentary knowledge of General Science. 

MA in Politics and IR/HR or Public Policy and Governance

The candidate should be well aware of topics like contemporary politics and public policy, current affairs and international affairs, Indian Constitution, political and economic issues in India that specific to Kerala and issues related to Human rights.

MA Economics

Graduation level knowledge of Economics and Key concepts taught in class 12th. 

MA Language Course (English or Malayalam)

All topics covered under the language BA course. 

MA in Gandhian Studies or Development Studies or History and Anthropology 

The candidates can refer deeply to their undergraduate syllabus of the chosen program and some relevant research studies and case studies conducted specifically on the topic. 

Master of Tourism and Travel Management

The candidate should be well-versed in Travel Geography and should possess appropriate knowledge of the English language, General Knowledge and Current Affairs. 

MEd. in Language or Mathematics or Science or Social Science or Commerce or Computer Education

All relevant topics covered in the undergraduate coursework should be prepared well by the candidate. 


The syllabus covered under LLB should be well prepared by the examinee. 

MGU CAT Eligibility

Before applying for the MGU CAT 2023, candidates must ensure that they fulfil all the required eligibility criteria. Here is a list of all the eligibility requirements for the MGU CAT 2023.

  1. Minimum of 50% marks in the final year of Undergraduate. 
  2. 45% aggregate marks in the case of MA Economics, MA Malayalam, MA English, MA Gandhian Studies, MA Development Studies, MA History and Anthropology and MEd.
  3. In MA language courses the marks attained in the particular subject of interest must be 50%.
  4. The Bachelor’s degree must have been attained in the subject of specialisation or its equivalent allowed by MG University.

MGU CAT Application Process 

The candidates whose class 12th results are not out yet are also eligible to apply on the condition that they will produce their mark sheets at the time of admission. Only one application form is acceptable from each candidate but they are allowed to apply for four different programmes under four different institutions. 

The application fee will be applicable as per the number of courses opted for by the candidate. The application fee for a general candidate opting for a single course is INR 1200. For candidates under the reserved category, the application fee is INR 600. The process of Application is as follows.

  1. Open the MGU Official Website:
  2. Click on the ‘Apply Online’ tab on the top right of the page.
  3. Register on the website by adding a few details including email and contact details. 
  4. An application number will be allotted to every registered candidate. 
  5. Login to the account and check if every detail is filled in. 
  6. Upload the documents such as a Passport size photograph in jpg format. 
  7. Select the course and exam centre.
  8. Proceed to the ‘Pay Now’ option. 
  9. Fill out the application form that appears after the payment of the application fee. 
  10. Check the details and submit the form. 

MGU CAT Admit Card

The admit cards are allotted to the candidates whose applications have been accepted by the university. The MGU CAT admit cards or hall tickets will be available before the commencement of the exam. The admit cards are required at the time of admission and at the time of the examination being conducted.  The candidates can download their admit card by following these easy steps.

  2. Login using the application number and password. 
  3. Save and print the admit card available on the dashboard. 

How to Prepare for MGU CAT 

The MGU CAT is an umbrella term for the postgraduation entrance exams conducted for various courses by Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The preparation for each course examination is different however some basic preparation tips have been provided here.

The MGU CAT results are released on the official website of MGU CAT. These results are only about the Common Aptitude Test conducted by MGU and do not ensure admissions on getting a good score. The selection process of the MGU includes various other steps that are covered in the later section.

MGU CAT Selection Process

The selection process of Mahatma Gandhi University involves an objective Common Aptitude Test, a Written Exam, an Interview, a Group discussion, and Bio-sketch. The selection process is different for different courses and may involve one or all of the aforementioned steps of selection. 

At each level, the candidate’s knowledge of the given subject will be tested using different scenarios. Some evaluations can also be conducted to evaluate candidates’ profiles based on reservations and categories like cultural and sports fields.
