The full form of NIPUN is the National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy. The National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN) Bharat was introduced nationwide by the Ministry of Education on 5 July 2021. The NIPUN Bharat program was started to help kids acquire fundamental skills at the end of third grade. This goal is estimated to be achieved by 2026-2027.

The “Lakshya Soochi” or Targets for “Foundational Literacy and Numeracy” are the NIPUN Bharat Mission’s stated objectives.
- Lakshyas have been created for grades Balvatika through 3.
- The Lakshyas are based on institutional research, ORF studies, and learning outcomes created by NCERT.
