The full form of BMI is Body Mass Index. It is a technique to measure body mass and based on that divide people into four categories obese, overweight, normal and underweight. The ratio is determined by your weight in kilograms to the square of your height (meters). People who have higher BMI are substantially heavier or have more body fat compared to their height.

How to Calculate BMI?

The two most important factors used to calculate BMI are the height of a person in meters and their weight in kilograms. In case the height is measured in inches then their weight should be taken in pounds. The formula for calculating BMI is as follows:

BMI = Weight (in pounds)/height (in inches) 2 x 703 

703 is a conversion factor

The formula for calculating BMI using height in meters and weight in kilograms is as follows:

BMI = Weight in kilograms/Height (m)2

What are the Metrics for BMI?

On the basis of the above-mentioned formula to calculate BMI, it is divided into the following categories:

  • A person is considered underweight if their BMI is less than 18.5
  • If the BMI value falls between 18.5 – 24.9 then the person is considered under the normal category
  • If the BMI value falls between 25 – 29.9 then the person is considered under the overweight category
  • The BMI value range of 30 to 34.9 states the person is under the obesity category 
  • If the BMI value is between 35 to 39.9 the person is considered under the severely obese category 
  • And the BMI value of more than 40 states the person is under the morbid obesity category
