What is the Full Form of SSC?

SSC full form is Staff Selection Commission. SSC was instituted in 1975 to select staff for several Group B and Group C posts. It is a recruitment organisation under the central government of India. This body recruits people for different government jobs in multiple departments, offices, and ministries. It is one of the most important organisations of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). It consists of a Chairman, one Secretary-cum-Controller of Examinations, and two other members.

History of SSC

Here is brief history of the Staff Selection Commission:

• The Subordinate Services Commission was established on November 4, 1975, under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions. Its primary objective was to conduct examinations and recruit suitable candidates for Group C (non-technical) posts in various government departments and ministries.
• In 1977, the Subordinate Services Commission was renamed as the Staff Selection Commission (SSC). The new name reflected its expanded role in recruiting staff for various positions in addition to Group C posts.
• Over the years, the Staff Selection Commission’s responsibilities grew, and it started conducting recruitment examinations for Group B (non-gazetted) posts as well. It became the central recruiting agency for various non-technical posts in the government sector.
• The Staff Selection Commission initially operated from New Delhi. However, to ensure efficient functioning and wider reach, it established several regional offices across India.
