What is the Full Form of LOC?

The full form of LOC is the line of control. The line of control is a name given to one of the boundaries drawn between India and Pakistan. The boundary exactly lies between the Indian and Pakistani militaries that control portions of the formerly princely state of Jammu and Kashmir.  However, this boundary or Line of Control is a de facto boundary rather than an official international border.

History of LOC

After the India-Pakistan partition occurred, both countries started to contest for the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian side contested the area because the ruler of Jammu and Kasmir had decided to give the accession to India. However, Pakistan contested due to the distinctive features of the Muslim majority state.

The first India-Pakistan war in 1947 lasted for more than 12 months. Ceasefire was later attained with the help of  UN mediation next war was fought in 1965 and another one the Indo-Pakistani war of 1971. What followed was the Shimla Agreement in 1972 which saw an agreement to transform the ceasefire line into the “Line of Control”.

  • Line of Control is a 740 km long line of military control or a boundary that divides the border between Pakistan and India in the JK region
  • The Indian army has placed strongly pointed wire coils for protection from any kind of infiltration.
  • The boundary is patrolled by the Indian army on the Indian side of the Line Of Control and by the Pakistani army on the Pakistani side of the Line Of Control.
  • Originally just identified as the Cease-fire Line, the border was later redesignated as the ‘Line of Control’ after the Simla Agreement was signed on 3 July 1972.
