The full form of CIS stands is Commonwealth of Independent States. It is a regional intergovernmental organization located in Eurasia. 

It came into existence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Encompassing an expansive area of 20,368,759 square kilometers, it is estimated to be home to approximately 239,796,010 people. 

The CIS promotes collaboration in various areas such as economics, politics, and military matters. Additionally, it possesses specific authorities pertaining to trade coordination, finance, legislation, security, and the prevention of cross-border crimes.

History

Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was established. The founding members of the CIS consisted of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. Subsequently, the remaining Soviet republics became part of the Commonwealth of Independent States by signing the Alma-Ata Protocol. 

Currently, the CIS includes the following countries as its members: Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Moldova, and Kyrgyzstan. Meetings are conducted periodically, rotating among the capitals of the CIS countries. 

Key forums within the CIS include the Council of Heads of State, the Council of Prime Ministers, and the Council of Foreign Ministers.

Aim

The CIS intends to coordinate its members’ policies regarding their economies, defense, immigration policies, foreign relations, environmental protection, and law enforcement.

  • The activities of the CIS are governed by the CIS Charter, which was signed in 1993. 
  • This charter establishes various institutions of the CIS and outlines their regulations and functions. It includes the rights and responsibilities of the member countries, as well as the objectives and principles of the Commonwealth. 
  • The Charter emphasizes the role of the Commonwealth of Independent States in promoting the development and strengthening of trust, mutual understanding, friendship, inter-ethnic harmony, and cooperation among its member states.
