What is the Indian Parliamentary Group?

The Indian Parliamentary Group (IPG) is a unique organization established in 1949. It functions as an autonomous body specifically for current and former members of the Indian Parliament. Moreover, IPG was founded on the 16th of August 1948 after a Motion was adopted by the Constituent Assembly. Additionally, the IPG has an important part in encouraging connections and knowledge sharing among Indian Parliamentarians. What Type of body is the Indian Parliamentary Group?

The Indian Parliamentary Group operates as an independent body which is distinct from the Indian Parliament. However, unlike Political parties or Parliamentary committees, the IPG transcends party lines and aims to create a common platform for all parliamentarians. Moreover, this promotes a space for broader dialogue and exchange of ideas.

Members and Composition of the Indian Parliamentary Group?

Furthermore, Membership in the IPG is open to all sitting and retired Members of Parliament (MPs). 

• Former Parliament members are also eligible to become associate members of the IPG. 
• However, associate members have limited rights as they do not have the privilege of representation at IPU and Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) meetings and conferences.
  • In addition, they do not receive the travel benefits provided to members by certain branches of the CPA.

Moreover, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha serves as the ex officio President of the IPG. 

• Additionally, the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha and the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha are the ex officio Vice-Presidents of the IPG. 
• The Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha also serves as the ex officio Secretary-General of the IPG.

4 Objectives of the Indian Parliamentary Group

Furthermore, the Objectives of the IPG are as follows:

• The IPG facilitates personal interactions among members of the Parliament of India.
• They examine issues of public importance likely to be brought before the Parliament. 
• Moreover, they organize seminars, discussions, and orientation programs and publish materials for the dissemination of information to IPG members.
• Additionally, IPG conducts lectures on political, defence, economic, social, and educational issues by Parliament members and distinguished people.
• They organize visits to foreign countries to establish connections with members of other Parliaments.
