The High Court judges are appointed by the President of India. The President appoints the Chief Justice after discussing with the Chief Justice of India and the Governor of the relevant State. Qualifications of Judges
A person appointed as a Judge of a High Court must possess the following qualifications:
- The person must be a Citizen of India.
- They should have served in a judicial capacity within the territory of India for a period of 10 years; or
They should have practiced as an Advocate in a High Court (or High Courts successively) for 10 years.
Moreover, the Indian Constitution does not specify a minimum age requirement for the appointment as a High Court Judge.
- Additionally, unlike the provisions for the appointment of Judges of Supreme Court of India, the Constitution does not include any provision for the appointment of a distinguished jurist as a High Court Judge.

Tenure of High Court Judges
The Indian Constitution does not specify the exact term of a High Court Judge. However, it lays down the following 4 provisions regarding this:
- A judge serves until reaching the age of 62 years.
- Moreover, any questions regarding their age are to be resolved by the President of India after consulting with the Chief Justice of India.
- The President’s decision is final.
- A judge can resign by submitting a written resignation to the President.
- A judge can be removed from office by the President upon the recommendation of Parliament.
- A judge vacates the office upon appointment to the Supreme Court of India or transfer to another High Court.
