Passed by the Lok Sobha in 2019, the CAA or Citizenship Amendment Act has been a trending event in India. This controversial bill was signed by the President on 12 December 2019. For people who are wondering what is the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), it refers to an act that aims to provide Indian citizenship to refugees from 6 communities coming from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan including Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Christian, Jain, and Parsi. Documents for CAA

Documents originally issued by the government authorities in Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Afghanistan are valid to commence the citizenship process even if they are past the validity period. Here is a complete list of important documents required for CAA:

  • Identity documents issued by the government of Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Afghanistan.
  • A copy of a passport issued by the government of Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Afghanistan.
  • Birth certificate issued by a government authority in Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Afghanistan.
  • Educational certifies proclaimed from a school, college, or university in Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Afghanistan.
  • Land or any tenancy record in Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Afghanistan.
  • Residential permit issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer or Foreigners Registration Officer in India. 
  • Any document reflecting the applicant’s lineage to parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents who were citizens of Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Afghanistan.
