- In 1895, five engineering firms and officials from the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry formed the EITA (Engineering and Iron Trades Association).
- In 1912, EITA was renamed IEA to reflect the organization’s goal of excluding dealers from participation and promoting the cause of producers.
- The Engineering Association of India (EAI) was founded in 1942 as an affiliate of the Indian Chamber of Commerce to encourage Indian-owned engineering firms.
- In 1974, the IEA and EAI merged to form the AIEI (Association of Indian Engineering Industry).
- The AIEI was renamed the CEI (Confederation of Engineering Industry) in 1986 to reflect the organization’s development.
- In 1991, industrial regulation was removed. On January 1, 1992, the CEI was renamed the CII (Confederation of Indian Industry), in accordance with the Government’s goal to liberalise Indian economic growth.
Objectives of CII
