CII Full Form: The Full Form of CII is a Confederation of Indian Industry. The CII seeks to establish and preserve a climate favourable to industry growth in India, collaborating with businesses and government alike through advising and consultative processes. 

The CII is a non-governmental, non-profit, industry-led and industry-managed body that plays an active part in India’s development. 

It is India’s premier business association, founded over 114 years ago, with a direct membership of over 7500 organisations from the private and public sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect membership of over 83,000 companies from around 380 national and regional sectoral associations.

History of CII

  • In 1895, five engineering firms and officials from the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry formed the EITA (Engineering and Iron Trades Association).
  • In 1912, EITA was renamed IEA to reflect the organization’s goal of excluding dealers from participation and promoting the cause of producers.
  • The Engineering Association of India (EAI) was founded in 1942 as an affiliate of the Indian Chamber of Commerce to encourage Indian-owned engineering firms.
  • In 1974, the IEA and EAI merged to form the AIEI (Association of Indian Engineering Industry).
  • The AIEI was renamed the CEI (Confederation of Engineering Industry) in 1986 to reflect the organization’s development.
  • In 1991, industrial regulation was removed. On January 1, 1992, the CEI was renamed the CII (Confederation of Indian Industry), in accordance with the Government’s goal to liberalise Indian economic growth.

Objectives of CII

CII engages in a variety of activities to achieve its primary goal of developing Indian industry, some of which are given below:

  • Recognise and promote industry’s contribution to India’s economic progress
  • Increase business participation in society.
  • To provide current information to the government and industry.
  • Providing assistance to the industry in its efforts to promote efficiency, the environment, and consumers.
  • Aiding Indian industry’s globalisation and integration into the global economy.
  • Dealing with small businesses necessitates making them more efficient.


The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) collaborates with industry, government, and civil society to create and maintain a climate conducive to India’s development through warning and consultation cycles. 

The CII is a non-profit, industry-driven, and managed organisation with over 9000 members from the business and public sectors, including SMEs and global partnerships, and indirect participation from 294 public and local industry bodies totalling over 300,000 organisations. 

The CII has shaped India’s development venture for over 125 years and works proactively to change the Indian industry’s commitment to public turn of events.
