In 2022, the United States issued the highest number of student visas to Indians, which is 82,000, more than any other country.
The US embassy in India informed that Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Mumbai consulates prioritized student visa applications from May to August to ensure that qualified students make it to their programs of study in the scheduled duration.
Chargé d’Affaires- Patricia Lacina stated that the United States remains for most Indian families the most sought-after country for higher education. “It also highlights the important contributions Indian students make to both our countries as they build life-long connections with American peers to maintain and grow international partnerships, working collectively” to address current and future global challenges.
Also stating that the delay in the visa processing was caused due to the Covid-19 scenario across the world.
Minister Counselor for Consular Affairs Don Heflin said that International student mobility is central to US diplomacy, and nowhere is the contribution of students bigger than in India.
Indian students contribute to about 20 percent of the international student population in the United States. There were 167,582 Indian students in the United States as of the 2020-2021 academic year.
The United Kingdom High Commission in India reported that around 118,000 Indian students received student visas in 2022 – a huge increase of 89 percent from the previous year.
