What Happened in India on July 24?

1991– Dr. Manmohan Singh presented a budget
Before becoming the PMO of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh served as a finance minister of India and was also the governor of Reserve bank in the 1980s. He presented the final budget for the year 1991- 92 on this day.

1994- Bodo kills 37 People in north-east India
In Arunachal Pradesh, a refugee camp was raided and more than 100 people were killed by Separatist tribesmen which included 37 Muslims. The attack was pre-planned after Bodo believed one of the women from their community was killed by a Muslim.

2000- S. Vijayalakshmi titled as the first Indian woman Grandmaster
It was one of the proudest moments for all Indians when a girl from Madras was announced as the grandmaster. She was the first Indian woman to achieve this title in chess. 

What Happened Around the World on July 24?

1901– Writer O.Henry was released from prison
William Sydney Porter popularly known as O.Henry was a famous writer. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment for embezzlement from a bank in Austin, Texas.

1967– St Christopher’s founded by Dr. Cicely Saunders 
Dr. Cicely Saunder was a nurse and social worker. She contributed to society by opening St Christopher’s to alleviating human suffering. The first patient was admitted on 13 July but the official opening was on July 24.

1969– Apollo 11 returns to Earth with Footprint
After being in space for 8 days, Apollo 11 returned to earth on this day. It captured the first footstep of Neil Armstrong in Space which was later broadcasted on television.

1984– “Careless Whisper” released
One single that hit back in the 84 was careless whisper by George Michael. Written Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, it was released on July 24. It was a hit globally and received many awards including Billboards.

1986– 13th Commonwealth Games in Scotland
Today is marked as the opening of the prestigious 13th commonwealth games organized in Edinburgh, Scotland. The games were held between 24 July to 2 August in the year 1986.

2012– Friends Forever by  Danielle Steel was released
One of the celebrated writers globally, Danielle Steel released her Friends Forever: A Novel which was 105th novel was released on this day in history. The novel revolves around the story of five friends – Gabby, Billy, Izzie, Andy, and Sean.

2015– Barack Obama visit to Kenya
Then-president of the USA, Barack Obama arrived in Kenya which is also his ancestral home for the first time after being elected as the president of the USA for the first time. It was marked as a historic step and was a two-day visit.

Amelia Earhart was an inspiration of million women around the world. She was the first women aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic ocean and was born on this day in Kansas.

1969– Jennifer Lopez
The popular American singer of Dance again, Jennifer Lopez was born on July 24 in New York. 

1976– Rashida Tlaib
Rashida Tlaib was the first woman that belonged to the Muslim community and was elected to the US house. Born in Michigan, she is a politician and lawyer.

1982– Anna Paquin
Another actress, born on July 24 is Anna Paquin. She Canadian-born New Zealand actress and award-winning actress including Oscars and Academy Award. 

1982– Elisabeth Moss
Popularly known for her role in Netflix’s MadMen, Elisabeth Moss is a famous American actress and producer. She was born in Los Angeles, California.
