The University of Malaya, also known as UM, is a public research-based university in Malaysia. It is known to be Malaysia's oldest and most prestigious university. It arose from the amalgamation of Raffles College and King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore in 1949. The university's quick expansion within its first decade led to the creation of two independent divisions in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, respectively. The university is accredited by the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Asean University Network. In Times Higher Education's international university rankings, it was ranked between 301 and 350. As per QS World Rankings 2021, the university is ranked #59.
University Malaya is located in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, on a 750-acre (309-hectare) campus that is easily accessible by public transportation. Some of the campus's amenities include Library - with over a million items, the library is able to provide students with a wealth of information. Postal services are capable of delivering any parcel, letter, or postcard. Staff and students have easy access to ATMs and bank locations. Bookshop - a service that includes everything from a university bookstore to a computer store for students. Recreational and Sports facilities Auditoriums and meeting rooms are fully equipped at the Perdanasiswa Complex.
There are 13 faculties, three centres, and two academies at the University of Malaya. The 13 faculties are - Faculty of Science, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Economics and Administration, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Business and Accountancy, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Built Environment, Faculty of Education, Centre for Foundation Studies, among others. Students are awarded undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across a wide variety of disciplines.
The University of Malaya has a large and illustrious alumni network, which includes two Malaysian Prime Ministers who have made major contributions to the country's progress, namely Mahathir Mohamad, and Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. In addition, Ungku Abdul Aziz - (Malaysian Economist) and Woon Khe Wei (Malaysian Badminton Player), Pandelela Rinong (Two-time Olympic Medalist), Faiz Khaleed (Malaysian Astronaut Candidate) are also among well-known alumni.
The University of Malaya employs 2,260 people. The University has a total of 21,055 students, with 14,291 undergraduates and 8,134 graduate students. Since 2007, the reader's Digest Trusted Brand Award exercise has repeatedly voted the University as the University of Choice.
