History, Affiliations and Rankings

Located in the Western Cape of South Africa, the University of Cape Town is a public research institution. One of the first higher education institutions in South Africa was established in 1829 under the name South African College. Together with the historic South African Institution and the previous Sub-Saharan African University, the University of Cape Town earned the reputation of a complete university. The South African National Accreditation System, or SANAS, has granted full accreditation to the University of Cape Town, allowing it to roll out all of its academic programmes and grant diplomas in accordance with those programmes. University was placed at 183rd by Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2022 and at 237th position by QS World University Rankings.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

On the Rhodes Estate, near Devil's Peak, is where the primary academic complex, also known as Upper Campus. The faculties of Science, Engineering, Commerce, and Humanities (apart from the arts departments) and Smuts Hall and Fuller Hall dormitories are all located on this relatively small campus. The Middle and Lower Campuses contain the Law faculty, the South African College of Music, the School of Economics, most of the student residences, most of the university administrative offices, and various sporting facilities. The major courses offered by the university are Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Science, etc. 

Accomplishments and Alumni

The University of Cape Town enjoys the prestige of holding a position of the highest level in the African University as per the QS World University Rankings. The disciplines of UCT - Law, Commerce and Medicine Faculties are constantly ranked among the hundred best universities internationally. UCT is the only member of Africa at the Global University Leaders Forum(GULF), within the World Economic Forum, which comprises 26 of the highest-level World Universities. Five UCT researchers, employees, or graduates have received the Nobel Prize. Some of the notable alumni include Geordin (Hill-Lewis, Mayor of Cape Town), Mark Shuttleworth (billionaire entrepreneur; founder of Canonical Ltd; sponsor of the Ubuntu Linux distribution; second space tourist), Lauren Beukes (international best-selling author of The Shining Girls, winner of Arthur C. Clarke Award), David Fanning, (Emmy Award-winning producer of Frontline), Edward Neville Isdell (former CEO of the Coca-Cola Company), Roger Ebert (Pulitzer Award-winning American film critic and writer), etc. 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

Over 29 000 students from over 100 different countries across the world attend the University of Cape Town (UCT), which is a cosmopolitan, global community of over 5 000 academic and professional, administrative support, and service workers. The University has students from a wide range of backgrounds, including race, national origin, religion, beliefs, age, socioeconomic level, gender, sexual orientation, and handicap status. The percentage of females is 54% and females are 46%. University's vibrant and diverse campus offers several opportunities for students to engage with their peers.
