Nanjing University, also known as Nanking University, was established in 1901 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. The university has witnessed the evolution of China from Monarchy to Nationalist government to Civil War Communist regime today. The history of the university dates back to 470 CE when Song Dynasty established Imperial Central University (Zongmingguan) as a comprehensive institution providing higher education and research, in five key areas: Literature, History, Confucian Study, Xuan Study and Yin Yang Study. The campus was moved to Nanking and came to be known as Nanking Imperial University in 1382. By 1902, the university saw many invasions and power struggle fight in Nanking. In 1902, under Qing Dynasty, Sanjiang Normal College was formed using Japanese education techniques to replace the traditional Chinese school Nanking Academy. In 1906, the name was changed to Liangjiang Normal College in 1906. When Nationalist government took over Nanking from Qing Dynasty, the name of the university was again changed to Nanking Higher Normal School in 1915. After the Civil War, People Republic’s of China undertook a serious reforms in 1952 like many colleges and departments, colleges of education, engineering, agriculture, and medicine, were removed from Nanjing University, and many new independent schools were formed, including Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing Institute of Technology which was located at former Nanjing University site and later renamed Southeast University, etc. and the name of the university was again changed to Nanjing Central University or Nanjing University in 1952. Today, Nanjing University has number of schools including School of Foreign Studies, School of Liberal Arts (School of Literature, or College of Literature), School of Government, School of Law, School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, School of Business (NUBS), School of Management: Business Administration, School of Economics, School of Journalism and Communication, School of Physics, School of Astronomy and Space Science, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, School of Geoscience, School of Atmosphere, School of Earth Science and Engineering, School of Life Sciences, School of Geography and Ocean Science, School of Medicine, School of Environment, School of Architecture and Planning, School of Electronics Science and Engineering and College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Nanjing University offers more than 200 programs at undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral levels. Not just this, it also offers many short term and part time and certification courses in many fields. Nanjing University has many research institutes like Institute of Education (Graduate School of Education), Institute for Gymnastics, Institute of Arts, International School, School for Overseas Students Education, Jinling College(First-class applied college), Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Science, School for Basic, Sciences Education, Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies (Hopkins-Nanjing Center). Today, Nanjing University has three campuses, Gulou, Xianlin and Pukou campus in Nanjing. The main campus, Gulou, is the main campus with administrative offices. All 3 campuses are divided into 28 schools and research institutes. NU has enrollment of approx. 27,500 students with the presence of more than 2,500 academic staff members. There are total around 3,500 international students from 90 countries. According to QS and THE Ranking, NU is ranked #122 and #169 in 2019.
