Lincoln University was established as a private university in 1854 and closed in 1972. It was established as a public university and was renowned as the United States' first degree-granting institution; it has remained a public institution since. Ashmun Institute was renamed Lincoln University in 1866, a year after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. During the long decades of legal segregation in the South, the college drew extremely intelligent students from a variety of states. The Senior College and University Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges has granted its accreditation (WSCUC). According to the 2020 edition of US News and World Report, Lincoln University is placed #119 in Regional Universities North, #41 in Top Performers on Social Mobility, and #40 in Top Public Schools. Lincoln University is placed at #372 in QS World University Rankings 2022.

Lincoln University is located in Oxford in southern Chester County, Pennsylvania, on a 422-acre campus. The university's second site is in University City, Philadelphia. This university offers undergraduate and graduate courses to roughly 2,000 students. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund has Lincoln University as a member school. Master of Arts in Human Services (MAHS), Business Administration (MBA), Education (M.Ed.) in Early Childhood Education, and Educational Leadership are among the courses offered at Lincoln University. Accomplishments and Alumni
Lincoln University, originally known as the Ashmun Institute, obtained its license from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on April 29, 1854, making it the country's first degree-granting historically Black college and university (HBCU). Many notable alumni include US Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Langston Hughes, and Cab Calloway; Medal of Honor recipient and pioneering African American editor Christian Fleetwood, Frederick Alexander; Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria's first president; Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president; and song artist Gil Scott-Heron, among many others.

The purpose at Lincoln University is to help students succeed academically, grow holistically, and progress toward graduate school or employment. With 63 % of undergraduate students being female, the university is largely female. It equips students with the information, attitudes, and skills they need to compete and make a good influence on their families, country, and world. About 43.9% of Lincoln University's students are from Pennsylvania, while the university also has about 70 foreign students who represent at least nine other countries. Graduates from Lincoln University have gone on to work for the BBC, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, Rockstar Games, and many other companies.
