History, Affiliations and Rankings
Hokkaido University was established in 1876 as the Sapporo Agricultural College, that in 1907, became the Agricultural College of Tohuku Imperial University. The Agricultural College changed its name to the Faculty of Agriculture in 1919, the year the School of Medicine was founded. The Faculty of Science, Faculty of Engineering, and lastly the Faculty of Law and Literature were added in 1947. In 1947, Hokkaido University also adopted its current name. Hokkaido University tops among Japanese universities in THE Impact Rankings 2022 and is placed at #10, while it ranks in the bracket #501-600 in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
Hokkaido University has two campuses and they are located in the center of Sapporo City, to the north of Sapporo Station, is where you'll find the main campus. The total campus, which is made up of academic and administrative buildings, research facilities, student residences, and farms, is about 180 hectares in size. Other campus is located in Hakodate, a city located in the southern part of Hokkaido. There are the Faculty and Graduate School of Fisheries Science. Fisheries Science students, on the other hand, begin their studies at the Sapporo campus in order to finish the three semesters of required liberal arts education courses before transferring to the Hakodate campus in the second semester of their sophomore year. This university provides a number of programs in different fields from Natural Science to Engineering.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Hokkaido University is one of the seven Japanese national universities founded in 1876. The University ranks at #114 in the world and #7 in Japan according to the Nature Index Top Academic Institutions 2021. It also holds the 28th rank among universities in the Asia-Pacific region as per the Reuters Asia-Pacific Most Innovative Universities. The institution is a world leader in various subjects ranging from social and natural sciences to humanities. In 2015, Reuters included the organization in the top 100 world's most innovative universities. Some of the alumni of this university are Uchimura Kanz - Christian evangelist, Akira Ifukube - composer, Nitobe Inaz - the author of Bushido, Ryuzo Yanagimachi - assisted fertilization and cloning pioneer and Mamoru Mohri - astronaut.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
There are over 18,000 students enrolled at Hokkaido University which is diverse with a lot of students from different countries. The University has very high diversity. On the campus, there are plenty of student clubs and organizations for the students to get involved in and make connections outside the classroom, including Japanese Arts, Music and Dance, Sports and Recreation and more. Many reputed companies come to this university for placement. Some of the companies are Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group, Mitsubishi Corporation, Honda Motor Company and Sony Corporation.
