History, Affiliations and Rankings
The institution was first established in 1870 as the Leicester School of Art, and it has undergone numerous transformations, including Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology and Leicester Polytechnic. On June 26, 1992, Leicester Polytechnic became De Montfort University. Its affiliation is with the Association of Commonwealth UniversitiesEUAUniversities UK. Its QS Top Universities 2021 World University Ranking is 801-1000.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
De Montfort University's most recent campus is in Gateway House, Leicester, England, and has good access to the road, air, and train systems. Within an hour, a car can take you from the East Midlands International Airport to the campus. Modern experimental facilities are available in laboratories, studios, and workshops regularly accessible to students. Nearly 300 programmes are offered at the foundational, undergraduate, and graduate levels by De Montfort. The institution also offers courses through distance learning and part-time study. The university is divided into four colleges, namely the faculties of business and law, computing, engineering and media, and health and life sciences. 44 remote learning programmes are offered by the institution, some of them include the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice, MSc in Cyber Technology, MSc in Clinical Pharmacy, etc.
Accomplishments and Alumni
DMU achieved Gold - the highest possible standard - in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), the only UK Government-endorsed measure of teaching quality in UK higher education (Office for Students, 2017). This recognises the outstanding teaching and learning on offer at DMU. Some of the alumni of De Montfort University International College (DMUIC) are Lewis Moody – Rugby player, Laura Coleman – Model, Louis de Bernières – Novelist, well known for ‘Captain Corelli's Mandolin’ (1994), Angela Smith, Baroness Smith of Basildon – Politician and Akram Khan – Dancer and Choreographer.
