The City University of New York was established in 1960 as a Municipal College Systems of the City of New York. It was only a year after in 1961 when the state legislation was passed to unite the senior and community colleges, the City University of New York (CUNY) came into existence. The history of the City University of New York traces back to 1847 when Townsend Harris proposed to establish a public academy of higher education in order to help people in need, no matter who they are. With a batch of 143 young qualified young men, the institution grew quickly in enrollment and it became the City College of New York.
