TOEFL Writing Topic: Not everyone will succeed in life on their first try. However, they should not give up.

Q- Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Not everyone will succeed in life on their first try. However, they should not give up. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. Do not use memorised examples.

Ans: I genuinely agree with the statement that not everyone will succeed in life on their first try, and giving up should not be a choice. Life is a journey that is filled with its own set of challenges and obstacles. It is our resilience to them that makes a difference which ultimately paves the way for success. This universal truth applies to all aspects of life, from learning a new skill to launching a business venture.

One of the primary reasons for this belief is that failure serves as a learning experience. Consider the story of Thomas Edison, the renowned inventor of the light bulb. Edison famously failed thousands of times before he finally succeeded. Each of the failed attempts brought him closer to success, as he got to learn what works and what doesn’t, and accordingly, he refined his approach. This example clearly illustrates that initial failures that one gets in life should not deter one from pursuing his goals. Instead, they should be viewed as stepping stones towards success. They are instrumental in achieving eventual success.

Moreover, persistence during the phases of failure helps individuals in building their character and resilience in life.  J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, was rejected by multiple publishers before her work was finally accepted. Her perseverance not only led to her eventual success but also made her a stronger and more determined individual. This example underscores the idea that persistence in the face of adversity can lead to personal growth and development. Apart from this, if one gives up instantly after the initial failure, it can majorly prevent individuals from realizing their full potential.

In conclusion, while it’s true that not everyone will succeed on their first try, it’s crucial not to give up. Failure can serve as a powerful learning tool, persistence can lead to personal growth, and continuing to strive for success can help individuals realise their full potential. Therefore, it’s not the number of times we fall that defines us, but the number of times we pick ourselves up and continue moving forward.
