Notably, a significant portion of these visas, totalling 121,290, have been allocated for “health and care” roles, marking a 157% surge. The National Health Service dealing with staffing challenges, is planning to fill positions with Indian and Nigerian nationals.

To address a scarcity of over a million jobs in various sectors, the UK government has taken steps to expand the shortage occupation list. This move aims to simplify visa regulations and facilitate the influx of workers from overseas.

Education Sector Sees Hike in Student Visas

Simultaneously, the education sector is experiencing a hike in student visas. Data from the UK Home Office reveals a remarkable 54% surge in sponsored study visas granted to Indian students. The total count has gone up to 142,848, reflecting an impressive increase of 49,883 visas in comparison to last year.

This surge is especially remarkable, higher than in 2019. Indication is such, that in June 2023 alone, the UK has granted almost 500,000 sponsored study visas, marking a substantial 23% rise from the previous year. Among these, Indian students account for nearly one-third, with an additional 154,000 visas granted to dependents of these students.

Despite this influx of migrants, concerns about immigration are politically challenging for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The year 2022 witnessed a record-breaking net migration figure of 606,000. However, maintaining immigration levels continues to be a concern.
