Study Abroad: Canada Unveils New Work Permit Program for U.S. H-1B Visa Holders
H-1B visa holders now have new work and study permit in Canada according to the country’s recent announcement.

Canadian Immigration Minister Fraser announced the establishment of an open work permit stream. Now, H-1B visa holders in the US can apply for a Canadian work permit. From July 16, 2023, a new work permit for holders of an H1-B speciality occupation visa will be available.

H-1B visa holders in the US can work and study in Canada according to the country’s recent announcement. Approved applicants will be given an open work permit in Canada that is valid for up to three years.

Also, study or work permit options for applicant’s accompanying family members was also part of the same. Additionally, spouses and dependants are also eligible to apply for a temporary resident visa, with a work or study permit, as needed.

Moreover, creation of an open work permit stream for H-1B speciality occupation visa holders in the US to apply for a Canadian work permit was a part of Canada’s first-ever Tech Talent Strategy.

As per Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), future jobs in Canada’s high-growth industries is supported by international audience. Additionally, it will foster innovation and advance emerging technology.

Innovations Stream Scheme

The Innovation Stream will be launded by the end of 2023. However, to draw in professionals, the plan calls for the creation of an Innovation Stream within the International Mobility Programme.

  • Selected applicants by the Canadian government supporting industrial innovation goals will be granted employer-specific work permits for up to five years.
  • Also, for highly trained employees in certain in-demand professions, open work permits will be granted for up to five years.
