IELTS Speaking Topic - Speaking Part 3: Culture (Follow-up Questions)

Q: Why is it important to learn about different cultures?

A: I believe learning about different cultures is important because it helps us to gain a better understanding of the world and its people. For example, when I visited Japan last year, I learned about their customs and traditions, like bowing as a sign of respect, which helped me to better interact with locals and show my appreciation for their culture. It also allows us to appreciate diversity and different ways of life, which can ultimately lead to more tolerance and empathy towards others.

Q: In what ways has globalisation affected local cultures?

A: Globalisation has had both positive and negative effects on local cultures. On the positive side, it has allowed for the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and cultural practices between different parts of the world. For instance, I have been able to learn about and try different types of cuisine from all around the world thanks to globalisation. On the negative side, it has also led to the homogenisation of cultures and the erosion of traditional practices and values.

Q: Do you think that language is an important aspect of culture?

A: Yes, definitely. Language allows people to communicate with one another and express their thoughts, ideas, and emotions. It is also closely tied to a community’s identity and heritage. For example, when I visited Spain, I made an effort to learn some basic Spanish phrases and found that locals appreciated my effort to communicate with them in their own language.

Q: How do you think technology has influenced culture in recent years?

A: I think technology has had a significant impact on culture in recent years. It has allowed people to connect with others from all over the world and share their cultural experiences more easily. For instance, I have been able to connect with people from different parts of the world through social media and learn about their cultures. At the same time, it has also led to the rise of new forms of culture, such as online communities and social media influencers.

Q: What are some of the benefits of travelling to other countries and experiencing their cultures?

A: In my opinion, travelling to other countries and experiencing their cultures can be an incredibly enriching experience. It allows us to learn about different ways of life, customs, and traditions, and gain a new perspective on the world. For example, when I visited Thailand, I had the opportunity to try traditional Thai food and attend a Buddhist temple ceremony, which gave me a better understanding and appreciation of their culture. It can also help us to develop our social and interpersonal skills, as we interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures.
