World Development Infomation Day History

On 17 May 1972, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development proposed an idea of information dissemination and public opinion mobilization with respect to the sustainable development of the nation. This is referred to as the resolution 3038 (XXVII). The resolution was sent to the UN General Assembly for its official approval. 

It was approved by the UN in 1972 and marked 24 October as the World Development Information Day. This day coincides with the United Nations Day and the adoption of the International Development Strategy for the Second United Nations Development Decade in 1970.

When is World Development Information Day Celebrated?

World Development Information Day is celebrated on 24 October. The crucial part associated with the objective of global development is the mobilization of public opinion. Authorities and the Governments of developed as well as developing countries should welcome public opinion with respect to global development. 

This day is also dedicated to aware people of the interdependence of the countries for sustainable development. It would result in the economic and social progress of the nation. The mobilization of public opinion should be governed by national bodies.

Theme 2023

The theme of World Development Information Day 2023 is “Harnessing the Power of Information and Communication Technologies to Build a Better World”. It highlights the importance of science and technology for sustainable development. The theme focuses on the utilization of ICT for development purposes.

According to this theme, developing countries should invest more in the research and development sector and must encourage other countries to invest more in science and technology for development. This process will fill the technological gap between the nations. 

ICTs are used to improve access to healthcare, education, and other essential services; to empower communities and promote participation in decision-making; and to create new economic opportunities.

Significance of World Development Information Day

World Development Information Day (WDID) is dedicated to public awareness about the need for international cooperation to solve development issues.
