It is also referred to as Bhartiya Grahak Diwas. This day is celebrated on 24 December because, on 24 December 1986, the President of India approved and passed the Consumer Protection Act. The National Consumer Rights Day is celebrated on 24 December every year to commemorate the passing of the Consumer Protection Act. The Consumer Protection Act was introduced and came into effect on 24 December 1986 by the President of India and since then, India celebrates this day to educate and protect the rights of consumers.

National Consumer Rights Day 2023 Theme

The theme for National Consumer Rights Day 2023 is “Empowering consumers through clean energy transitions”. This theme focuses on the importance of providing safe, affordable, reliable, as well as clean energy resources to all consumers during the global shift. The motive behind this is to make sure that the economy of the country is moving in a direction that leads to a sustainable future. 

This day is also celebrated to educate consumers about their powers. Consumer Protection Act 1986 and Consumer Protection Act 2019 which came into effect on 20 July 2020 make sure that all consumers possess the power and knowledge to fight against any kind of fraud, market abuse, or social injustice that is hampering their rights.

History of Bhartiya Grahak Diwas 2023

The history of Bharatiya Grahak Diwas dates back to 1986 when the Consumer Protection Act was passed in the Parliament of India. In 2019 some amendments were made in the act and it came into force force on 20 July 2020. This act was passed protecting the rights of consumers and protecting them from market abuse or exploitation. 

The Consumer Protection Act 2019 was passed to widen the scope of the Consumer Protection Act 1986. It also includes punishment against misleading advertisements, false product descriptions, or any kind of guarantee of products and services. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) will impose fines and penalties against the companies for such false and misleading advertisements.

Consumer Protection Act

Consumer Protection Act was passed in 1986 and its scope was widened to include misleading advertisements and consumer rights. Consumer Protection Act 2019 has replaced the previous act.
