National Cancer Awareness Day is an annual event that is celebrated on 7 November every year to educate and raise awareness about the symptoms and treatment of Cancer. This day also celebrates the cancer survivors. The National Cancer Awareness Day was launched by the Union Health Minister of India Hon’ble Harsh Vardhan in 2014 in remembrance of Marie Curie. She was a chemist who conducted research on radioactivity and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911 for the discovery of Radium i.e. a radioactive element used in Cancer therapy. Her birth anniversary is celebrated as National Cancer Awareness Day. When is National Cancer Awareness Day Observed and Celebrated?

National Cancer Awareness Day is celebrated on 7 November every year to spread awareness about the severity of cancer, its symptoms, and treatment. This day was initiated by Harsh Vardhan, the Union Health Minister in 2014, from then onwards India is celebrating this day. 

This day is celebrated in honour of Marie Curie to commemorate her birth anniversary. She was a French physicist and chemist who was involved in the discovery and research of radioactive elements. She studied radium and polonium elements and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. 

She was also facilitated with another Nobel Prize in 1903 for Physics that she shared with Henry Becquerel and Pierre.

Cancer is a deadly disease that is characterized by the uncontrolled division of cells in the body. If undiagnosed and untreated it may lead to death. Spreading awareness about the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention is an important concern. Every year there is a particular theme for Cancer Awareness Day.   3. Protect yourself from the UV rays of the sun
  4. Regular check-up is important
  5. Exercise regularly
  6. Do not consume tobacco and alcohol
  7. Maintain a healthy weight

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Cancer can be prevented by screening tests, vaccine shots for Hepatitis B and papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, and through healthy choices.
