1. Govardhan Puja (Saturday, 2 November 2024)
In 2024, Govardhan Puja will be celebrated on 2 November. This important Hindu festival celebrates the mythological story of Lord Krishna lifting up the Govardhan hill to provide shelter to villagers from rain. On this day, devotees of lord Krishna express their gratitude and thankfulness. It is mainly celebrated in the Braj region. To celebrate Govardhan Puja, people make a hillock using cow dung and decorate it with flowers.
2. Bhaiya Dooj (Sunday, 3 November 2024)
Bhaiya Dooj or Bhai Dooj is a Hindu festival which celebrates the pious bond between a brother and sister. It is made up of two names, Bhai meaning brother and Dooj meaning the second day after the new moon which is the day of its celebration. In 2024, Bhaiya Dooj will be observed on 3 November. On this day, sisters invite their brothers for a meal full of their favourite dishes. They also apply tilak on their brother’s forehead and pray for their well-being.
3. Chhath Puja (Thursday, 7 November 2024)
Chhath Puja is a Hindu Vedic festival. It is predominantly celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and in some areas of Madhya Pradesh. This festival is observed in honour of God Sun and involves a four-day long celebration including abstinence and praying. During this festival, people dip in the holy Ganges river, clean their homes, and perform other traditions.
4. Tulsi Vivah (Wednesday, 13 November 2024)
The festival of Tulsi Vivah celebrates the union of the holy Tulsi plant and the shaligram form of Lord Vishnu. During this festival, many people observe a fast, decorate their courtyards, and construct a mandap or marriage booth using bricks. Tulsi is considered an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi and thus the union holds great religious and cultural significance.
5. Guru Nanak Jayanti (Friday, 15 November 2024)
Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab, is an important day in Sikhism. It celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the first Sikh Guru. Celebrations of Guru Nanak Jayanti begin two days before the actual date. The day is generally celebrated with a 48-hour non-stop recitation of the Guru Granth Sahib followed by a Nagarkirtan, a procession led by five men who refer to themselves as the Panj Pyare.
