As the world rapidly advances in technology, STEM skills have become indispensable, not only for economic growth but also for solving pressing challenges such as climate change, healthcare innovation, and technological advancement. However, despite these needs, India is facing a shortage of skilled professionals in STEM fields. According to a report by the National Science Foundation, globally, 80% of the fastest-growing careers require strong STEM skills, yet India produces less than 2 million STEM graduates annually, compared to over 7 million in China. This gap puts India at a disadvantage in the global job market and hampers its ability to drive innovation. The World Economic Forum (WEF) has also pointed out that India’s education system is not preparing enough students with the necessary STEM knowledge to meet future demands. One of the major challenges lies in the fact that only 5% of Indian students are enrolled in STEM courses at the university level, according to the All India Survey on Higher Education. This is far lower than in other countries such as the United States, where around 25% of students are engaged in STEM education. Additionally, only 12% of students in rural areas have access to quality STEM resources, limiting their chances of pursuing these fields.
