Summary of NCERT Class 6 English Chapter 2: The Friendly Mongoose
Once there was a farmer and his wife who had a small son. They wanted a pet for their son to be his companion when he grew up. They decided to get a baby mongoose. The mongoose and the baby grew up together and became good friends.
One day, the farmer’s wife had to go to the market, so she asked her husband to watch over their baby and the mongoose. She was a bit worried about leaving the baby alone with the mongoose, but the farmer assured her that the mongoose was friendly.
While she was away, the farmer got busy with his work and lost track of time. When the wife returned, she saw the mongoose waiting for her, but it had blood on its face and paws. She thought the mongoose had hurt their baby and got very angry. She accidentally dropped a heavy basket of groceries on the mongoose.
However, when she checked on the baby, he was fine. She saw a dead snake on the floor and realized that the mongoose had actually saved their baby by killing the snake. She felt very sad for misjudging the mongoose and realized her mistake. She thanked the mongoose for being a hero, even though it was too late, as the mongoose had passed away.
Thus, this Panchtantra story teaches us not to judge others too quickly. Also, it teaches us to be grateful for the help we receive, even if it comes from unexpected sources.
