Class 6 NCERT Maths Chapters’ Brief Introduction

Here are a few learning outcomes that are expected after reading the chapters given in the NCERT Class 6 Maths book.

Knowing Our Numbers 

The chapters lay a strong foundation for understanding numbers. Students will learn how to make comparisons between bigger and smaller values. Students will learn to make comparisons and arrange numbers in a desired order.

Whole Numbers

This chapter describes the whole numbers and their properties. Students will learn functions like addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division. Students will also learn about the closure property, division by zero, and distributive and associative properties of multiplication as well.

Playing With Numbers 

Here students will learn more about the properties of numbers in a playful manner. Students will learn about the factors and multiples followed by the understanding of the prime and composite numbers. This chapter is highly beneficial for the overall learning of the students as the chapter teaches Lowest Common Multiple (LCM), Highest Common Factor (HCF), and Prime Factorisation – all of these make the base for solving critical problems in upper classes.    

Basic Geometry 

Students will learn the basic concepts of Geometry here. They will learn the concept of point and how it defines a location. Further, students will learn the difference between a line and a line segment. Students will also learn the concepts of parallel and intersecting lines. However, the chapter also teaches about closed geometric shapes such as polygons, triangles, and circles. 

Understanding Elementary Shapes 

This chapter teaches students about all sorts of angles within the closed geometric figures such as an acute angle, an obtuse angle, a reflex angle, a straight angle, and a right angle. Students are made to learn the use of the protector to determine angles within the given shapes. 

Integers 

This chapter lays the foundation for understanding everything about the integers. Here the positive and negative integers are taught and then, students how to range the given integers in increasing or decreasing order of their values. The chapter ends up teaching – how to add and subtract integers.   

Fractions 

The chapter makes use of figures and shapes to give an easy understanding of the fractions to the students. Students will learn here about Like Fractions, Improper Fractions, Proper Fractions, Mixed Fractions, and Equivalent Fractions. Students will also be taught the conversion of these fractions into their simplest forms. 

Decimals 

Students are introduced to the concept of decimals here and how they bring differences to numbers. Students learn to convert fractions to decimals and vice versa. Operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division involving decimals are also covered.

Data Handling 

Chapter 9 focuses on organizing and interpreting data. Students learn to construct bar graphs and pictographs. Concepts of data collection, organization, and analysis are explained.

Mensuration 

In this chapter, students are introduced to the concept of measurement. They learn about the perimeter and area of various shapes like rectangles and squares. Basic concepts of measurement units are discussed.

Algebra 

This chapter introduces elementary concepts of algebra. Students learn about algebraic expressions and their evaluation. Concepts like variables and constants are covered.

Ratio and Proportion 

This chapter introduces the concept of ratios and proportions. Students learn how to solve problems involving ratios and proportions. Real-life applications of ratios and proportions are discussed.

Symmetry 

Chapter 13 deals with the concept of symmetry in geometry. Students learn about line symmetry and rotational symmetry. Various examples and exercises on symmetry are included.

Practical Geometry 

In this chapter, students learn about basic constructions using a compass and ruler. They practice constructing angles, triangles, and other geometric figures. The chapter emphasizes hands-on geometry skills.
