Important Questions in NCERT Class 7 Civics Chapter 2: Free PDF Download

1. In this chapter, you have read that health is a wider concept than illness. Look at this quote from the Constitution and explain the terms ‘living standard’ and ‘public health’ in your own words.

An important part of the Constitution says it is the “duty of the State to raise the level of nutrition and the standard of living and to improve public health.”

Ans. In the context of the Constitution, ‘living standard’ refers to the overall quality of life that citizens should have. It includes access to basic necessities like food, shelter, clean water, education, and healthcare. ‘Public health’ refers to the well-being of the entire population. It involves measures taken by the government to ensure that people have access to healthcare facilities, clean environments, and preventive health services.

2. What are the different ways through which the government can take steps to provide healthcare for all? Discuss.

Ans.  The government can take the following steps to provide healthcare for all:

  • Establishing and maintaining public healthcare facilities like hospitals and clinics. These facilities should be equipped with the necessary medical infrastructure and staffed by trained professionals.
  • The government can implement health insurance schemes to ensure that even those who cannot afford private healthcare services have access to necessary medical treatment. These schemes should cover a wide range of medical services, including preventive care, diagnostic tests, and treatment for various ailments.
  • Promoting awareness about health and hygiene through educational programs and campaigns is another effective approach. This can help in preventing diseases and promoting a healthier lifestyle among citizens.
  • The government can invest in research and development in the field of healthcare to advance medical technology and treatments. This can lead to better and more efficient healthcare services for the population.
  • The government can regulate and monitor the quality of healthcare services provided by both public and private institutions. This ensures that all citizens receive high-quality care regardless of their economic status.

3. ‘Improvement in water and sanitation can control many diseases.’ Explain with the help of examples.

Ans. Improvement in water and sanitation plays a crucial role in controlling diseases. For example, constructing clean and accessible water sources ensures that people have access to safe drinking water, which prevents waterborne diseases like cholera and dysentery. Sanitation facilities, such as proper toilets and sewage systems, help in disposing of waste hygienically, reducing the spread of diseases like typhoid and hepatitis A.

Proper sanitation practices in public places like markets and hospitals are also essential. Regular cleaning and waste management prevent the breeding of disease-carrying vectors like mosquitoes and rats. This reduces the incidence of diseases like malaria and dengue fever. Awareness campaigns and educational programs about hygiene and sanitation also promote healthy practices within communities. These efforts empower individuals to take responsibility for their own health and contribute to disease prevention.
