April Holiday List: India is a country with people of many faiths. These faiths are reflected in a wide variety of celebrations of holidays every month. In the chain of festivals celebrated, the month of April brings with it many important festivals and religious and cultural holidays for students in India.
The month of April kicks off with the Hindu New Year. As per the traditional Hindu lunar calendar Ugadi, Gudi Padwa, and Chaitra Sukhladi will be celebrated on April 9th, 2024. Chaitra Sukhladi, Ugadi, and Gudi Padwa all festivals mark the first day of the Hindu lunar calendar and the beginning of the New Year in various parts of India. The festival is celebrated on the first day of Chaitra month and represents the new beginning of harvest season. The festival’s charm is the worship of the creator of the universe, Lord Brahma who is believed to be the Supreme God and creator of the universe.
People in Maharashtra on Chaitra Sukhladi erect colorful poles outside their homes. These poles symbolize victory and the beginning of happiness and prosperity. Families gather to perform rituals of the festivals, cook delicious festive meals, and exchange Ugadi Pacchadi, a dish that contains six tastes. The six tastes of the dish reflect the ups and downs of life.
Ugadi or Yugadi, also known as Samvatsarādi is celebrated by the Kannadigas. They wake up early in the morning have an oil bath and wear new clothes. Special poojas are offered to Lord Vishnu while praying for his blessing in the year ahead. People gather to share Bevu-Bella, a mix of neem flowers and jaggery. Bevu-Bella symbolizes the contrasting experiences of life.
In Maharashtra, Gudi Padwa is the start of the new year. People make beautiful rangoli and special gudi on this day. Gudi, which is a flag-like structure is hoisted in front of the homes symbolising the victory and celebration of new beginnings. Families are dressed in beautiful and traditional dresses, perform puja, and share the special pooran poli among the community.

2. 9 April 2024 | Tuesday | Vaisakhi
Baisakhi or Vaisakhi is a cultural and religious festival celebrated by Sikhs and Hindus. The day is marked as the New Year of Sikhs and commemorates the formation of the Khalsa Panth under Guru Gobind Singh in the year 1699. Baisakhi is one of the three main festivals that the third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das ji chose to celebrate as the grand fe community. The festival is celebrated on 14th April of every year.
The celebration of the festival begins at Gurudwara. People offer special prayers, and kirtans and recite the hymns of Guru Granth Sahib. Many devotees also listen to the Katha that explains the history of the Khalsa order. A nagar kirtan is also organized on this day in a large procession. People start their early days with baths and prepare festive foods like kheer. They dress in traditional outfits and visit the nearby gurudwara for special services.
In Punjab, Vaisakhi is yet another important celebration for agriculture. Farmers offer gratitude to God for harvesting the Rabi crop. Fairs that exhibit folk arts, delicious and authentic food, and kabaddi tournaments are organized. People also perform the Bhangra folk dance to celebrate the festival with joy.

2. 11 April 2024 | Thursday | Eid-ul-Fitr (Tentative)
Eid-ul-Fitr which is an important Muslim holiday marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The month is famous for its dedicated fasting from sunrise to sunset. The confirmation of the date of the festival depends on the sighting of the moon. Eid-ul-Fitr celebrates spiritual rituals and reflection of self during the month of Ramadan.
The day is celebrated with the beginning of the early communal prayer sessions. People are gathered in the mosques and worship wearing new clothes. Homes are decorated with beautiful items such as lamps and lights and they warmly wish each other ¨Eid Mubarak.¨
Eid is celebrated by partaking in the feasts of the celebration and spending time with loved ones. Children often receive money or gifts which reflect the cause of the value of charity. New clothes, dawn prayers, and togetherness of family and friends make Eid-Ul-Fitr a memorable festival.

4. 14 April 2024 | Sunday | Ambedkar Jayanti
Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated on April 14th to celebrate the birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. He was a reformer, Indian jurist, and economist. Bhimrao inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against the social discrimination of Dalits. He also played a significant role in drafting the Constitution of India.
People celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti to honor the vision and efforts which further helped eradicate social evils such as the caste system and discrimination among the people. People decorate the statues of Ambedkar with flowers, and garlands and conduct prayers. His favourite foods like mushrooms and chicken are often cooked in community meals for the people.
Ambedkar Jayanti serves as a reminder for society about the equality of rights and upliftment of the poor. The occasion helps in promoting the principles of liberty, equality, fraternity, and justice in the country.

Ram Navami is a famous Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Rama in the spring season. Lord Rama, is also an incarnation of Vishnu and the central male figure of the epic Ramayana. People admire Ram as an avatar of dharma, morality, virtues, and idealism. Ram Navmi is celebrated on the ninth day of Chaitra Navaratri which often falls in the late month of March or April.
The festival is celebrated as a religious observance. People gather in the temple with families to listen to the Katha and many other religious activities and events. Hindus commence their day with ritual baths, prayers, and singing of hymns. Many devotees place the images of Rama in the cradle and rocked by the devotees.
At home, families decorate their homes with flowers and perform puja with rituals. Some people also fast till sunset when the official birth celebration or moment is said to fall. Feasts are arranged of traditional foods with cultural events such as showcasing plays, songs, and dances related to Rama. Rama Navmi brings the people together and learns to follow the paths of morality and ideals of Rama in real life.

6. 21 April 2024 | Sunday | Mahavir Jayanti
Mahavir Janma Kalyanak which is also known as Mahavir Jayanti is one of the most important festivals in Jainism. The festival celebrates the birth of Lord Mahavira, who was the twenty-fourth and last Tirthankara of present Avasarpini. He was born in 599 BC and was an ascetic philosopher who taught the people the principles of nonviolence, truthfulness, and non-possessiveness.
People from the Jain community visit temples on Mahavir Jayanti. They offer prayers, perform idol bathing ceremonies, and eat the meals prepared for the community people and other followers. Some devotees on this day also fast, meditate, or participate in the silent processions. Donations are made to monasteries, nuns, and charitable organizations.
Many devotees also visit Palitana city in Gujrat. The city is believed to be the place where Mahavira attained nirvana. People chant religious slogans, shower flowers on the idol, and seek the blessings of Lord Mahvira. People remember and vow to follow the messages, harmony, and spiritual concepts of their Guru in their lives.
