Origin of Horowitz Foundation Grants

The Horowitz Foundation Grants were born after the founders’ experience working with PhD students. They found that many students faced financial constraints while carrying out their research. After initially handing out grants personally, they switched to disbursing the amount through Transaction Publishers’ Grants-in-Publication Program. The Horowitz Foundation for Social Policy replaced the program soon after, with the first grant being awarded through the organization in 1999.

Horowitz Foundation Grants: Objective

As mentioned previously, the Horowitz Foundation Grants are meant to support research scholars worldwide. The focus of this grant is divided into a 3-point structure, as follows:

Horowitz Foundation Grants: Funding

The funding of Horowitz Foundation Grants amounts to USD 10,000 given out in 2 instalments. The first installment of USD 7,500 is awarded for research purposes. The second installment of USD 2,500 is disbursed to students after the project’s successful completion. But recipients have to provide evidence of either of the following to claim the second installment:

1. Their dissertation’s acceptance and approval
2. Have their research accepted for publication in a reputable peer-reviewed journal.
3. Be invited to contribute a book chapter based on their research to a published academic book.

Note: These grants are non-renewable. Recipients can complete their project and claim their final grant installment only up to 5 years after the award’s announcement.

Horowitz Foundation Grants: Eligibility

To apply for the Horowitz Foundation Grants, you need to fulfill the following criteria. You cannot apply for the grant more than once in a given year. And if you have applied for this grant previously, you are still considered eligible to apply again:

1. The applicant must not have a doctoral degree (PhD).
2. The applicant must be PhD student in social sciences in the dissertation stage.
3. The applicant must have their topic approved by their department or they must have defended their dissertation proposal.
4. Applicants from any nationality or university worldwide are eligible for this grant.

How to Apply for the Grants?

2. To create an account, click on the “Application Form” button.

Selection Criteria

The applications for Horowitz Foundation Grants are evaluated based on the Trustees’ assessment of various aspects of your research. They are applicability, feasibility, empirically rich or theoretically informed research, letters of recommendation, methodology, and originality. An overall merit of all aspects of the application decides the approval of the grant. The organization supports projects with social policy application on a local or global level. Terms and Conditions

• Grants are awarded directly to individuals, not institutions. If the grant is processed through an institution, a waiver for overhead costs is required.
• Recipients are expected to recognize the foundation’s support in any publications resulting from their research. They should also inform the foundation about the publication details.
• Grants are disbursed promptly upon receipt of the recipient’s acceptance letter. It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that the grant does not conflict with any other funding they have received. Grants are typically administered in June of the year they are awarded.
• Grant recipients will be featured on the foundation’s website, in relevant professional publications, and in a press release distributed to university media offices.
