SAR Full Form: SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate. The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) has established a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) for mobile phones. The Department of Transportation has authorised the permissible SAR value limits for mobile phones of 1.6 W/kg measured across 1-gramme tissue.

Before being marketed in each market, all mobile phone models are tested to ensure they meet national and international exposure standards for radiofrequency emissions.

Because phones are tested at maximum power levels under laboratory circumstances to assure compliance, the SAR values published for each model tend to exaggerate real-life exposure levels dramatically.

What is the SAR-Tick?

SAR Tick is part of a Mobile & Wireless Forum (MWF) effort by mobile manufacturers to help consumers understand more about the SAR for their mobile phones or wireless device.

However, companies also want consumers to understand how to use and interpret SAR results. Manufacturers in the MWF will begin to include a SAR-Tick in user manuals to assist consumers in quickly and easily identifying SAR information and knowing that their phone model has been tested for compliance with national and international requirements.

Who Decides the Safe Exposure Level?

Currently, the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) have developed exposure standards for workers and the general public.

Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East all use the ICNIRP guidelines. In the Americas, a similar standard created by the IEEE International Committee on Electromagnetic Safety (ICES) is in use.

Both safety guidelines are based on a thorough examination of the scientific data.

Mobile phone safety restrictions are based on well-known and confirmed heating effects – or microwave heating. However, biological impacts (at levels not known to be produced by heating) are not ignored, and when defining safety limits, international safety bodies evaluate both thermal and non-thermal effects.

Importantly, the standards were created utilising worst-case scenarios and incorporating additional safety margins to safeguard everyone in the community, including the elderly, children, and pregnant women.
