As per official data, there are 486 airstrips or airports in India. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) manages 137 airports of them. It includes 103 domestic airports, 34 international airports and 10 custom airports. Some airports are Civil Enclaves. A civil enclave is an area at a military air base allotted for the usage of civil aviation.

There are some flying strips dedicated to flying schools in India and military air bases. So, the exact number of Airstrips/Airports in India is 486.

What is Airport Authority of India (AAI)?

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is responsible for managing the airports in India. The Ministry of Civil Aviation is responsible for creating, upgrading and maintaining the infrastructure of airports in India. The AAI also provides Air Traffic Management services to the aeroplanes flying over Indian Airspace. It is a government institution founded on 1 April 1995.
