The classical Indian dancing style known as Kuchipudi was developed in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It was invented in the Andhra Pradesh village of Kuchipudi, hence its name. The complex footwork, delicate moves, and subtle facial expressions define the dance style. It combines aspects of storytelling through dance (Natya), pure dancing (Nritta), and expressive dance (Nritya).

History of Kuchipudi Dance

Kuchipudi, like other Indian classical dance styles, has its roots in the Natya Shastra, a key work on the performing arts. Although estimates range from 500 BCE to 500 CE, its first complete collection is dated between 200 BCE and 200 CE. The Natya Shastra text comprises roughly 6000 verses divided into 36 chapters in the most often studied version. The work explains the theory of Tava dance (Shiva), the theory of rasa, the theory of bhava, expression, gestures, acting techniques, fundamental steps, and standing postures—all of which are a part of Indian classical dances. This is according to Natalia Lidova. This ancient document claims that dance and performing arts are a means of expressing spiritual concepts, values, and the essence of scriptures.

The beginnings of Kuchipudi can be traced back to the third century BCE. It was first performed by a travelling troupe of actors known as Bhagavathalu, who would perform plays and dances based on Hindu mythology as they moved from village to village. Kuchipudi developed a distinctive style and method over time, becoming a more refined and sophisticated art form. It is currently performed both domestically and abroad and is acknowledged as one of the eight Indian traditional dance genres.
