The leader of the Bardoli Satyagraha Leader was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Bardoli Satyagraha was a nationalist movement, that started in 1928. It is based on the name of a taluka in Gujarat, Bardoli, which suffered crop failure and economic problems in 1925. On the other hand, the Bombay Presidency government increased the tax rates to 30%. This movement began with civil disobedience on 12 June 1928, followed by a revolt. The success of this movement gave rise to the popularity of its leader, Vallabh Bhai Patel. 

Background of Bardoli Satyagraha

When floods and famine hit the Bardoli Taluk in Gujrat, the tax rates were raised by 22% by the Bombay Presidency. In an extreme situation like this, crops were badly affected. Farmers made different pleads and requests to the concerned department but nothing happened. 

This is when farmers went to Bardoli Satyagraha leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to seek help and to raise their voices against this severe issue in January 1928. Before agreeing to become the leader of this movement Sardar informed the farmers about land seizes, possessions, and imprisonment. He made sure that farmers were ready to take all of it in, before beginning the movement. 

An integral role in this campaign was played by Mahatma Gandhi who published the magazine “Young India” for awareness of this movement. 

About Bardoli Satyagraha Leader Sardar Patel

The former Prime Minister of Independent India, Sardar Valabhabhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875, to Jhaveribhai Patel in Nadiad, Gujrat. By being impressed by the selfless and strong acts of Mahatma Gandhi, Vallabhabhai Patel accepted the leadership of the former. In 1918, he became much closer to Mahatma Gandhi, followed by Khilafat Movement and Bardoli Sayagrah. This is how he has been able to secure his positions in different national movements throughout the nation alongside Mahatma Gandhi. He has also greatly contributed to the formation of the Indian National Congress (INC). 

Features of Bardoli Satyagraha

Bardoli Satyagraha Leader Vallabhbhai Patel made himself the leader of the movement and asked farmers and peasants to keep things peaceful. The whole taluk Bardoli was divided into camps with the active participation of both men and women. 

All peasants were asked toot to fill the taxes and if any of them did, they would face social rejection because they would be supporting the British government in doing so. 

Two employees M Mushi and Lalji Naranji left the Bombay Legislative Council to showcase their support to the farmers in the Bardoli Satyagraha. 

Most of the villagers left the Taluk and when Britishers came to obtain taxes they found a deserted village. 

Although it was a small-scale Satyagraha, it received nationwide recognition because of its leaders and initiative.
