The full form of FSL is forensic science laboratory. A forensic science laboratory is a specialized scientific facility focused on forensic science. These labs may be operated by either private companies or the government but are commonly linked to a country’s law enforcement system.

DNA/Serology Analysis

The forensic tools used for DNA/Serology identification involve collecting and identifying fluids found at crime or death scenes. Forensic scientists specializing in serology determine if the fluids are human or non-human and identify the type of human fluid samples present, along with any potential diseases. 

These fluids can include blood, urine, sweat, saliva, semen, or breast milk. Once the fluid is identified, serological forensic scientists isolate and identify the DNA in the sample. DNA is unique to each individual, making it valuable for identifying victims and suspects.

DNA analysis technology became available in 1986, initially facing challenges, but it has now gained widespread acceptance for identifying likely suspects and excluding innocent individuals. DNA evidence has helped solve cold cases and exonerate wrongly accused offenders.

Presently, law enforcement uses the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) to enter DNA profiles of individuals involved in criminal activities. CODIS combines DNA data from the Convicted Offender database and the Forensic Index database, which includes DNA information from crime scenes. 

Forensic labs enter crime scene DNA profiles into CODIS to search for matches, providing leads to law enforcement at local, state, and federal levels.
