Badruddin Tyabji was a well-known figure in our Indian history and left a mark as a lawyer, activist, politician, and educational reformer during the British Raj. He was born on the 10th of October 1844, in Bombay. Furthermore, his father was Mullah Tyab Ali Bhai Mian and belonged to the Sulaimani Bohra community and was a descendant of an Arab family that migrated to Cambay. Interestingly, at a time when many Muslims in India saw English education with scepticism, Tyabji’s father encouraged all his seven sons to study in Europe. What was the Early Life and Education of Badruddin Tyabji?

Tyabji was brought up in a very progressive home which had an impact on his upbringing. His elder brother Camruddin became the first Indian solicitor admitted to England and was his inspiration. Thus, this led to him setting his sights on a legal career. 

  • Additionally, he travelled to England and studied at the University of London before joining the Middle Temple which is one of the four Inns of Court in London. 
  • In the year 1867, Tyabji became the first Indian barrister of the High Court of Bombay. 
  • Hence, this achievement was a small victory against the then-colonial restrictions.

Political and Social Activism of Badruddin Tyabji

Tyabji was keenly interested in social and political reform. In 1871, he had an important part in advocating for an elective Bombay Municipal Corporation, a step towards Indian self-governance. 

  • Moreover, Tyabji then joined the Indian National Congress (INC)
  • In 1885, INC was formed to peacefully get self-rule for India. 
  • Tyabji was the founding member and was also the third president of the INC from 1888 to 1890. 
  • Additionally, as president, he advocated for Hindu-Muslim unity which was an important factor in the developing nationalist movement.

Tyabji was an advocate for education and believed that education was key to empowering Indians. 

  • In the year 1874, he established the Anjuman-i-Islam College in Bombay. 
  • It began as a single school which has grown over time and has over eighty educational institutions from pre-primary to postgraduate levels.

As the years went on, Tyabji’s legal career continued to thrive. He was a brilliant lawyer hence earning the respect of his peers as well as the public. 

  • Additionally, he became a judge in the Bombay High Court in 1895. 
  • This appointment was met with widespread support which was a true reflection of Tyabji’s impartiality and legal expertise. 
  • Furthermore, he was also the acting Chief Justice in 1902 thus becoming the first Indian to hold this prestigious position in Bombay.
