The Indian warrior king, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who was also the founder of the Maratha Empire, died on April 3, 1680.

801: Barcelona captured 
Barcelona was captured from the Moors by King Louis the Pious after a siege of many months on April 3, 801. 

1043: Edward the Confessor 
The crown of the King of England was given to Edward the Confessor. 

1559: Peace of Cateau-Cambresis
Leading to the end of the Italian Wars, the treaty, Peace of Cateau-Cambresis, was signed.

1865: Richmond captured 
Richmond, Virginia, was captured by the Union forces. It was the capital of the Confederate States of America. 

1885: Gottlieb Daimler 
A German patent was granted to Gottlieb Daimler for his engine design on this day in history. 

1895: Libel case brought by Oscar Wilde 
Trials in the libel case brought by Oscar Wilde began on April 3, 1895. It eventually led to his imprisonment on charges of homosexuality. 

1922: Joseph Stalin 
Joseph Stalin became the first General Secretary of the Communist Party in the Soviet Union. 

1936: Bruno Richard Hauptmann executed 
Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr. was kidnapped and killed on the charges of which Bruno Richard Hauptmann was executed. 

1948: Marshall Plan 
The Marshall Plan was signed by the President of the United States, Harry S. Truman. It authorised $5 billion as aid for 16 countries. 

1968: “I’ve Been on the Mountaintop” speech 
Just a day before his assassination, Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous “I’ve been on the mountaintop” speech. 

1973: Handheld Mobile Phone Call 
The first Handheld Mobile Phone Call to Joel S by Martin Copper of Motorola on April 3, 1973. 

1981: Osborne 1 
The first successful portable computer, Osborne 1, was unveiled at the West Coast Computer Faire held in San Francisco. 

1996: Theodore Kaczynski 
Theodore Kaczynski, who was a suspected ‘Unabomber, was captured in his Montana Cabin in the United States of America.

1997: Thalit Massacre 
The Thalit Massacre began in Algeria by the Guerrillas.

2007: Train World Speed Record 
The TGV train, which was in France, on the LGV Est high-speed line, set the new world speed record on this day. 

2008: ATA Airlines
One of the largest passenger airlines of the United States, the ATA Airlines, filed for Bankruptcy on April 3, 2008.

2010: iPad 
The tablet computer, also known as the first generation iPad, was launched by Apple Inc. on this day.

2017: Bomb explosion in St. Petersburg
The metro system in St. Petersburg was the centre of a bomb explosion. It killed 14 people, and several people were injured.  

2018: Shooting at YouTube headquarters
There was a shooting at the YouTube headquarters in California on April 3, 2018.
