The University of Waikato was established in 1964, in Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand after a petition was signed that viewed the university as a means to cater to the needs of the South Auckland region and the citizens of Hamilton. From welcoming its first 100 students in 1964 to becoming the fastest-growing university in New Zealand in the 1980s, to eventually establishing rapport as a forward-thinking university that offers world-class education, Waikato has become one of the most popular studies abroad options for international students in New Zealand. It is affiliated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning (ASAIHL), and holds the prestigious Triple Crown Accreditation - AACSB, EQUIS and AMBA - which is held by less than 1% of the universities worldwide. The University of Waikato ranks #331in the QS World University Rankings 2023.

Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses

The university has two campuses located in Hamilton and Tauranga. The campus in Hamilton spans an area of 64 hectares, comprising numerous trees, recreational areas, lakes, a garden, and sporting areas. The campus in Tauranga is a satellite campus. The University of Hamilton comprises over 10 schools and over 7 research institutes, which makes the University among the global leaders of the best research institutes. Their 10 schools include Te Kura Toi Tangata Faculty of Education, Waikato Pathways College, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Te Huataki Waiora Faculty of Health, Sport and Human Performance, Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Maori and Indigenous Studies, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Te Mata Kairangi School of Graduate Research, and Waikato Management School. Their 7 research institutes include the Environmental Research Institute (ERI), Institute for Business Research (IBR), Institute of Professional Learning (IPL), National Institute of Demographic and Economic Analysis (NIDEA), Wilf Malcolm Institute of Educational Research (WMIER), and Institute for Security and Crime Science.

In addition, M?ori and Pacific students currently account for 35.2% of all students at the University of Waikato, the greatest proportion of any New Zealand university. Their total administrative staff consists of 1,483 members. The university is known to have taught a total of 9,904. International students cover 20% of the total population at the university.
