History, Affiliations, and Rankings

Established in 1889, the University of New Mexico came into existence with the passage of House Bill No. 186 by the legislative assembly of the territory of New Mexico. It became a State University when New Mexico became a state. It has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is academically affiliated with the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, Universities Research Association, and Space Grant Colleges. Athletically, the University of New Mexico has been affiliated with NCAA Division I - FBS - Mountain West. QS Global University rankings have given the University of New Mexico a global rank in the range of 651-700, Times Higher Education has given it a world rank in the range of 251-300, and US News & World Report has given the University of New Mexico a global rank of 256.

Infrastructure, Campuses, and Courses

The main campus of The University of New Mexico is located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The size of the campus is 769 acres. The University has a North, South, and Central campus. The University is Home to 13 Libraries, and 12 schools and colleges with departments in Management, Arts & Science, Education, Fine arts, Nursing, Pharmacy, Population Health, Architecture & Planning, Engineering, Law, Medicine, and Public administration. The University also has a graduate school and a University College. It offers more than 200 degrees and certificate programs including 91 baccalaureates, 71 masters, and 97 doctoral degrees

Accomplishments and Alumni 

132 years since its founding, the University of New Mexico has had a long road of History and Accomplishments. It is a member of the Sandia Academic Alliance, along with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Texas at Austin, Purdue, and Georgia Tech. It ranks No. 2 in the impact of innovation for Mid-Sized Research Universities in the 2020 George W. Bush Institute and Opus Faveo Innovation Development poll. The UNM School of Engineering is the highest-ranked engineering program in New Mexico, and the only Carnegie R1 (highest research activity) university in the state, putting it in the same class as MIT, Stanford, Purdue, and other well-respected engineering programs in the country. Many Notable Alumni like Paige Ackerson-Kiely (Poet), Christopher Andronicos (Geologist), and Gary Berntsen (Former CIA Senior Operations Officer) have graduated from the University of New Mexico. 

Student Diversity and Visiting Companies

Over 5% of the Student Body of the University of New Mexico comprises International Students. More than 1250 students from over 100 countries attend the University every year. It is from a total of more than 25,000 students. The Career Service Center of the University of New Mexico offers many resources to students and alumni for connecting with potential employers and creating a better CV and resume. The University hosts many career fairs for students to interact with employers.
