History, Affiliations and Rankings
The University of Connecticut was established in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School, named after two brothers who provided the school's property. The institution became a land grant college in 1893. The name of the university was changed to the University of Connecticut in 1939. The University of Connecticut has risen to become one of the top 25 public colleges in the United States after more than 130 years. It has been affiliated with the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities, Universitas 21, the National Sea Grant Program, and Space Grant Colleges. QS World University Rankings has given it a rank of #373. Times Higher Education rankings have given it a global rank in the range of #401-500. Furthermore, US News & World Report rankings have given it a world ranking of #332. The University of Connecticut has also been ranked #63 in National Universities in the Best Colleges 2022 edition.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
The University has a total of 7 campuses. The primary and original UConn campus is in Storrs, a division of the Town of Mansfield, 22 miles east of Hartford, Connecticut's capital and bordered by the towns of Ashford, Coventry, Willington, and Windham. Students at UConn can pursue over 100 majors, 8 undergraduate degrees, 17 graduate degrees, and five professional degree programs. Bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs are offered through the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the Graduate School, the Neag School of Education, the School of Nursing, the School of Business, the School of Dental Medicine, the School of Medicine, the School of Engineering, the School of Social Work, the Ratcliffe Hicks School of Agriculture, the School of Pharmacy, the School of Law and the School of Fine Arts.
Accomplishments and Alumni
Since its establishment 141 years ago, the University of Connecticut has had a long road of History and Accomplishments. The University of Connecticut is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. The 2015 Sierra Club "Cool Schools" list of environmentally responsible universities ranked UConn eighth in the U.S. Many Notable Alumni like Scott DaRos (Emmy Award-winning animator), William S. Simon (former Executive Vice-President: Walmart), and Dawn Lundy Martin (poet, essayist, and activist) have graduated through the University of Connecticut.
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
Over 14% of the Student Body of The University of Connecticut comprises International Students. More than 3,800 students from over 130 countries attend the University every year. It is from a total of more than 32,000 students. Despite the lack of off-campus activities, students can participate in one of the more than 450 clubs and organisations on campus, which include more than 30 fraternities and sororities. They may also watch a movie in the school's movie theatre or skate for free on the ice rink. Students place a high value on sports at the University of Connecticut. Freshmen are not required to live on campus, yet more than 70% of all students do so. Students gather each year before final examinations for Spring Weekend, a multi-day event that originated in the 1940s as the school's Campus Community Carnival. The Career Service Center of the University of Connecticut offers many resources to the students and alumni for connecting with potential employers and creating a better CV and resume. The University hosts many career fairs for students to interact with employers.
