History, Affiliations and Rankings

Florida Atlantic University (FAU), a public school of higher learning and research, was established in 1961. FAU is the first public university in the Miami metropolitan area, part of the State University System of Florida. It opened its doors in southeast Florida and was the first of its type to provide only graduate and upper-division-level coursework at the start. FAU is a member of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). The Florida Legislature acknowledged the need for higher education in South Florida in 1989 when it designated Florida Atlantic as the principal state university for Broward County. To fulfil this function, the university would open a campus in Dania Beach in 1997 and another in Davie, in western Broward County, in 1990. In 1994, Florida Atlantic purchased 50 acres (20 ha) of land in Port St. Lucie to create a Treasure Coast campus. This would be the fifth campus for the university. The university's expansion continued in 1999, when it opened the Jupiter Campus, named after the late John D. MacArthur. The university's honours college is located on this campus. It is affiliated with NCAA Division I in sports. It is ranked #1053 according to US News and World Reports 2022 and at #1001-1200 according to the QS World University Rankings 2022.
