History, Affiliations and Rankings
Emory University was founded in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Church in Oxford, Georgia, and was named after Methodist bishop John Emory. Atlanta's private research university is Georgia's second-oldest private institution of higher education and one of the country's fifty oldest private universities. U.S. News & World Report 2020 ranked Emory University 21st among national institutions in the United States and 71st among universities worldwide. The QS World University Rankings 2022 and THE World University Rankings 2022 places the university at #160 and #82, respectively. ACE, AAU, SACS, ORAU, NAICU, and IAMSCU are just a few of the well-known organizations with which it collaborates. According to a poll conducted by the Wall Street Journal, the university is ranked 17th among colleges and universities in the United States.
Infrastructure, Campuses and Courses
At the gateway of the university's Atlanta campus, the stunning Haygood-Hopkins gate welcomes visitors, opening students to 600 acres of expansive green space and Italian Renaissance–style structures. There are magnificent areas for study breaks, jogs, and even lawn sports all throughout campus, from the busy new Student Center and exquisite marbled buildings encircling the Quad to the wide green expanse of Lullwater Preserve. The nine academic divisions of Emory University include the College of Arts and Sciences, Goizueta Business School, Laney Graduate School, School of Law, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing, Rollins School of Public Health, and Candler School of Theology. In collaboration with Nanjing University, the university runs the Confucius Institute in Atlanta. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and Emory have a developing academic research connection (KAIST).
Accomplishments and Alumni
Emory University also offers a five-year dual degree programme in engineering, in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and a dual master's degree in social work with the University of Georgia. The University has more than 149,000 alumni, with 75 alumni clubs established across 20 countries. It has an outstanding list of alumni that include Alben Barkley (35th VP of the United States), Thomas Milton Rivers (Director of Rockefeller Institute), Kenneth Cole (Kenneth Cole Productions' founder), Kim Dae-Jung (8th President of South Korea), Bobby Jones (Renowned Golfer), Sonny Carter (Famous NASA Astronaut) and Peter Buck (a guitarist in REM band).
Student Diversity and Visiting Companies
Students attend university from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, five US territories, and more than 100 countries. Out of the almost 1400+ freshmen enrolled in fall 2019, 30% were Caucasian, 24% were Asian, 14% were Black/African American, 13% were Latinx/Hispanic, 13% were International. Emory University's total enrollment for fall 2018 was over 15000+ students, with 8000+ undergraduates and 7000+ graduate and professional students. Students come from all 50 states across the US and from over 100 different countries. Companies like Accenture, American Express, PWC & JP Morgan recruit hundreds of Undergraduates. On the other hand, Post-graduates are being extensively hired by companies such as Amazon, Deloitte, FedEx, GE and several others.
